The study was set to examine the environmental management system (EMS) implementation in
selected industries in Uganda. The study was based on three objectives: To determine the types
of pollution control, to examine the challenges faced and to identify the benefits accrued from
the implementation of environmental management systems in the selected industries.
The study targeted a total population of 86 from the staff of the selected industries and a sample
of 80 respondents was selected using Yamane formula. Though, 76 respondents returned
questionnaires to the researcher for analysis. A case study research design was employed and
both quantitative and qualitative approaches of data collection were used. Data was analyzed
using descriptive statistics, multiple regression analysis; where the statistics proved that 80.1%
significance level was found and the hypothesis testing proved that there is a strong and positive
relationship between types, challenges and benefits of pollution control environmental
management systems and product quality of the selected industries.
The study findings on the first objective revealed that 60.1% accepted that types of pollution
control environmental management systems are crucial for controlling pollution and managing
negative environmental impacts effectively. The study findings on the second objective indicated
that 59.2% agreed that there were challenges faced in implementing pollution control
environmental management systems in the selected industries. The study findings on the third
objective indicated that 60.6% affirmed that EMS focused on reducing emissions, discharges,
and waste, leading to better environmental performance.
The study also established that various types and forms of Pollution Control Environmental
Management Systems (EMS) were being applied including; as ISO 14001, TPP, EIA, BAT, CP,
EMA, PPP, and LCA. However, every form of EMS was designed to address specific
environmental impacts and regulatory requirements.
It is recommended that the selected industries should create a clear environmental strategy that
aligns with industrial goals and regulatory requirements. This strategy should emphasize
commitment to pollution prevention, compliance, and continuous improvement. The selected
industries should also develop measurable environmental objectives and targets based on the
company's pollution sources and environmental impacts. |
