Abstract:
The study analyzed determinants of challenges facing Nursing students during clinical training at
Kibuli School of Nursing and Midwifery. It was guided by three objectives i) to analyze
determinants of challenges facing Nursing students during clinical training at Kibuli School of
Nursing and Midwifery, ii) examine patient-related determinants of challenges facing Nursing
students during clinical training iii) to analyze performance-related determinants of challenges
facing Nursing students during clinical training. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey design
which employed both quantitative and qualitative methods. The study population was 384 and a
sample size of 196 respondents was determined. Correlation results showed that teacher-related
determinants of challenges are significantly and positively related (r = .372, p < .05), patient
related determinants of challenges and clinical training are significantly related (r = .817, p< .05),
performance-related determinants of challenges and clinical training are significantly related (r =
.681, p< .05). The study concluded that while the important role of educators in shaping the clinical
learning experience is well-supported, teacher-related factors alone do not account for all
variations in training effectiveness. It was also indicated that patient-related challenges are not the
only or even the primary determinants of training success, indicating that institutional and support
factors also play a substantial role. From this, the study recommends that implementing regular
evaluations of teaching performance, incorporating student feedback, can help address
instructional challenges and improve overall quality. It was also suggested that there is need to
developing clear guidelines for patient interactions will help students handle diverse patient
behaviors and conditions more effectively. It was also suggested that regular performance reviews
with detailed feedback are also recommended to guide students in identifying areas for
improvement and tracking their progress throughout their clinical training.
