Abstract:
The study was about the contribution of UN World Food Program to humanitarian assistance of refugees. A case of Kiryandongo refugee settlement, Kiryandongo District. The study was guided by the following objectives; i) to analysis the ways in which UNWFP provides Humanitarian assistance to the refugees in Kiryandongo refugee settlement, ii)the challenges faced by UNWFP work on Humanitarian assistance and iii)to examine existing strategies for enhancing contribution of UNWFP on Humanitarian assistance to refugees in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement
The researcher obtained data from 92 respondents, and according to the study, UNWFP provides humanitarian assistance to the refugees and conducts nutrition interventions. However there are also some International organizations like the UNHCR, International Federation of the Red Cross, Real Medicine Foundation (RMF) and many more others who help in the case of the rampant occurrence of epidemics and other services.
The study found out that the continued occurrence of internal conflicts in the camp among the South Sudan refugees, hamper efforts to adequately provide food for them. There is a delayed food distribution to the refugees in case of fighting and bickering because the staff workers are not secure as this could put lives of the staff involved in the food distribution at stake. Some refugees do not get food at all because of the infighting which often leads to delayed deliveries and lack of access to the distribution sites and even if they reach there, there would be nothing being distributed.
The study concluded that UNWFP can improve delivery of food aid to refugees by generating clear records on refugee status which helps to determine the status of the refugees, expanding teams to monitor refugee activities, and giving out rations in time as agreed on schedule.
The researcher recommends that there should be introduction of Nutrition Education and counseling initiative in the refugee camp, regular sensitization about nutrition and harmonizing the groups fighting in the settlement that they are out here in Uganda because of the common goal. It also recommends that the humanitarian food Aid and service delivery should be improved.
